Volunteers Are Needed for Haiti

The relief work of AMURT and AMURTEL is continuing thanks to the donations coming from around the world. Donations are still needed so continue to donate via the websites www.amurt.us , www.amurtel.org , or www.amurt.net .

In addition to donations, the relief effort needs volunteers. Volunteers must be be physically fit and capable to withstand circumstances like sleeping on the floor and all the problems that now exist in Haiti. They need to be able to pay their own way to Haiti and some extra when they get there. They need to get along with others in tight circumstances and also be able to take the initiative when necessary. The team is looking for doctors, nurses , EMTs, engineers, mental health workers, photojournalists and photographers and child care workers. Here is a complete list of positions that we are trying to fill:

Photojournalist (2 positions): graphic documentation of AMURT/EL efforts in the disaster response.

Procurement and Logistics (2 positions): according to a given set of specifications, the person will have to purchase in consideration of the best value of the product (quality, cost, availability). The position will require providing the transportation arrangements and coordination of the deliveries and purchased materials from the United State to Dominican Republic or Haiti, and from the Dominican Republic to Haiti. English and Spanish required.

Nurses (many): focus on work with injured, disabled, and impaired persons of all ages, especially young and elderly and also involves the provision of nursing care for patient or patients with acute injuries or life threatening illnesses. English required, French or Creole recommended.

Doctors (many): treatment of people injured in the quake and setting up of clinics. Also, one position as a medical coordinator (doctors, equipment, and facilities) will be required. English required (French /Creole translator will be provided).

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Counselors and Psychologists for the Children (many): psychological assistance and help children physically or mentally affected by the earthquake, such as those who lost their parents, to recognize normal stress reactions and emotions caused or aggravated by a trauma and regain control over themselves and their environment. French or Creole recommended, English required.

Structural Engineers (two positions): structural engineers to determine the feasibility of remaining structures such as warehouses and buildings that can house medical facilities, shelters, as well as food/water distribution and storage. Also, to analyze and determine the extent of needed repairs in existing building, and to design and supervise re-construction efforts. English required.

Emergency Response Specialists (four positions): responsible for the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of a wide range of humanitarian, recovery and longer-term activities, to ensure the survival, well-being of children and mothers, and affected community in Port-au-Prince The specialists will play an important role in supporting the regional / zonal authorities in the coordination of nutrition, water-sanitation, education and protection sectors with all stakeholders. Specifically, focus on the implementation of adequate water purification systems in consideration of water sources, population needs, and availability of materials. English required.

Urban planning (one position): design of large evacuation camps and planning of temporary/permanent infrastructures. Potential collaboration in planning new urban areas, including urban risk reduction interventions, policies, approaches and strategies to help developing more sustainable and organic urban communities. English required.

Public Relations (1 position): responsible for infusing public confidence to donors and collaborating agencies and for maintaining AMURT/EL's good standing and reputation in front of the donors, the community, other NGOs and the locally present media. This position requires the maintenance of a continuous and open dialog with all the key persons (including the community) with a potential opinion about the work done by AMURT/EL and also with AMURT/EL workers for a continuous update on the ongoing relief activities.

Animators for children (with a background as animators, clowns, artists, educators, or similar) (multiple positions): responsible for developing and maintaining an ongoing animation program for the children. Specific aspects of the activities can require the input of child counselors, psychologists, and neo-humanistic educators to strengthen the self-expression, reinforcement, and spiritual development of the children.
